Declutter Your Business Finances

Are you Leaking Money?

Leaking money from your business is sad and inefficient. Sad because that money could be put to good use eleswhere in your life or business.

When was the last time you went through your outgoings with a fine tooth comb and …. If you had extra money, what would you use it for?

Is there something you have been really wanting to do in your business? Or could you spend the extra on self-care – something just for you? Or do you love to travel and want to plan another trip? It’s great to have an incentive.

Financial Decluttering

Take last months bank/card statements/paypal account and let nothing go unquestioned. Your business is too important to waste money on things you don’t want or need. Be deliberate about it. It’s respectful to you and your business that you care.

It’s not about draconian chopping out. It’s about looking, choosing deliberately and deciding.

Are you Leaking Money?

Here is a list of possible money leaks that you could declutter in your business:

  • Subscriptions that you no longer use with direct debits that just keep coming out
  • Paying bank charges that happened because you overlooked your cash flow
  • A course that didn’t work for you. Did it have a money back guarantee. Could you get your money back?
  • Could you pay less for some services: telephone, banking services?
  • Are you spending too much on outsourcing? Is it time for a part time or full time employee?

Is Disorganisation Creating Money Leaks?

This is not a direct cost but a crucial one to watch. When a business is not running on efficient systems then a lot of time is wasted and wasted money translates to less profits.

Are you missing important emails because your inbox is wild, for example?

Or are you missing important client opportunities because you don’t have a good CRM?

Soft Expenses – A Luxury Problem

Hard expenses refer to the basis costs of running your business but there are many extras which are just ‘nice to have.’ I’m guilty of enjoying the soft expenses a lot. Things like … online group subscriptions, courses, books.

Are these expenses eating at your profits? Decide if these expenses are something that are really benefitting you in your business or if they are a luxury that is cutting into your bottom line?

What is important to you? Choose deliberately.

Some outgoings will be obvious: things that have slipped your mind, things that you just haven`t had time to stop. Others will be trickier.

For the trickier expenses, one idea is to list every single outgoing and give it a rating between 1 and 5 where 5 means `totally indespensible` down to 1 which is `really not needed.`. This helps to put things into perspective.

Anything less than a 3 needs a good looking at and a few questions asked:

  • What is the function of this in my business?
  • What does having this give me?
  • What would actually  happen if I got rid of this expense?

Sometimes going through your list can spark inspiration. You might start using a service again or feel inspired to keep going with that course or subscription. Fantastic. That`s what clutter clearing is all about – renewed energy and purpose!

Look at alternatives

Once you have got your expenses list a bit cleaner then its time to look at alternatives. Are there cheaper versions that are just as good? Don`t compromise ease and quality for expense but just be aware that sometimes you just have not looked at alternatives for a while.

I`d love to hear how you decluttered your expenses and how and where you saved some dosh.

10 Things to Declutter in Your Business

Have a look at these ideas on how you could declutter your business to make things easier, simpler and more streamlined.

  1. PDFs – keep the ones you really love and will refer back to.  Check out this post if you’re a PDF junkie like me!
  2. Mindset – are your beliefs helping you to grow in your business?  Do you need to declutter some of those negative beliefs.  EFT can be a great tool for this.
  3. Your desk – this is one of the magic portals in your life and certainly one of the most important of the business magic portals.  Keeping your desk clutter free helps you create clarity and focus in your business.
  4. Stationary – I am a true lover of stationary but too much of anything aint good.  What stationary are you keeping and will you ever use it.  Is storing and managing it creating an energy drain in your business?
  5. Outgoings – are you paying for things in your business that you are not even using?  Services, apps or subscriptions, for example that were once a good idea but no longer serve you.
  6. Facebook Groups – do you belong to too many groups that you aren’t participating in?  Clear that social media clutter.  It’s just a distraction.  Gropus that you enjoy are where its at.  Focus your energy there as it will be a better energetic match for you.
  7. Busy work – do you have focus in your business or do you spend hours doing busy work that doesn’t really help you achieve your goals.  Check out this Facebook group that I belong to which helps you to increase productivity by focusing on your important goals. ditch the busy work and enjoy focusing on your dreams.
  8. Business goals – are your goals in alignment with your values?  Sometimes when we are not achieving our goals it’s because we are keeping ourselves stuck working on goals that don’t align with our values.  So our business are cluttered with goals that are not a good fit for us.  That makes achieving anything an uphill, energetic drain.
  9. Email Clutter – this is a biggie for lots of us.  Is your inbox jam packed with newletters that you don’t even read?  Taking time out to deal with backlog is well worth the effort.
  10. Your office – another magic portal.  What does your office say about you and your business.  What would you like it to say?  What’s your vision for your business and how can you create an office  that reflects this?

The point here is to choose – actively choose what you want in your business.  Don’t let clutter drain and dictate.  You are in charge.

Reasons to Stay Cluttered: The Shadow Side

We want to get organised

We want to declutter

Our gut tells us it would help us in our lives and business

But yet ….. we find it impossible and we delay

We put it off

We get overshelmed at the very thought of it

We tell ourselves its not that important

Why is this?

Its because there is always a shadow side.  A side where not doing it is benefitting us in some way.

We all have shadow sides and its in the integration of our shadows that we can become free of our limitations.

When we don`t act when out gut tells us we should there is always a hidden benefit to carrying on just as we are.

Your shadow side will have a hidden agenda

Your shadow may whisper like this into your ear:

“I can do what I want and I like doing what I want.  It’s my mess and I like having it like this.  Nobody can tell me what to do.  I do what I want and that includes keeping my clutter.”

“My things make me feel safe.  I wouldn`t be me without them.”

“I don’t want to look after myself. I love being irresponsible and revelling in my chaos.”

“I don`t want people in my home.  If I`m cluttered they can`t come.”

“Clutter means I don’t have to try. I like not having to make so much effort.  I can`t progress my business because I have too much clutter. My clutter means that I can`t really try.”

Listen to your Shadow

Yes, your shadow has something to say and its important to listen.

I`ve know people to ignore their shadow, declutter and then within a couple of years find themselves in exactly the same cluttered place again.  That reminds me of the lottery winners with money mindsets that don`t support their new acquisition of funds.

Respect and listen to your shadow.  Listen and take action on its behalf.

What does your shadow need?

How can you help it feel valued?

Listen to your shadow, not so that you can clear your clutter (that`s just a bonus) but so that you can free yourself from her restrictions and drama!

New Technique to Combat the Clutter Buts

You are probably wondering what Clutter Buts are….

Clutter Buts are the sneaky thoughts and feelings that we have about our clutter. Ideas that keep us stuck and sometimes feeling useless and unable to move forward.

One of my missions is to ban the Clutter Buts in the world of the business women I work with.

Some Common Clutter Buts

But …. I don’t have enough time

But …. I have to buy storage first

But …. there’s too much stuff

But …. I don’t have enough energy

All Clutter Buts are understandable. I don’t call them excuses. I can them Clutter Buts!

The thing with clutter is that its icky and sticky. Energetically it really does suck. This makes us want to avoid it. So we procrastinate and put off decluttering even thou we really hate it and would rather it was done. And we come up with Clutter Buts in order to put it off even more.

Discover Your Clutter Buts

Yours may be obvious or subtle but it pays to identify them because once you have them you can challenge them. When you have resistant thoughts about decluttering notice the feelings are coming up. What stops you? What makes you resist? Write your Clutter Buts in your journal.

A New Technique to Combat the Clutter Buts

Journaling is an age old technique we have used to get stuff out and make us feel better in the process. I encourage you to use yours to explore your clutter.

Write your Clutter Buts in your journal.

Once you have them in front of you, you can tackle them head on.

Let’s play the …… Turn the Clutter But Around

You have to relax into this with a little bit of imagination. The idea is that you turn the Clutter But around so that new thoughts, emotions and possibilities become available to you. Solutions and the motivation to see them through pop on out. Hurray for solutions and motivation for indeed they make the world go round.

So ….

I don’t have enough time …. becomes ….. If I had the time how would I feel and what would I do?

I have to buy storage first …. becomes …. If I had all the storage first how would I feel and what would I do?

There’s too much much stuff …. becomes ….. If there was just enough stuff how would I feel and what would I do?

There is something magical and loosening about these questions. Thoughts and feelings begin to untangle and action becomes possible.

Pick Your Decluttering Helpers Carefully

Getting friends and family to help with your decluttering is a great idea.  It will save you time and sanity if you get the right people.  If you get the wrong people it will leave you feeling drained and lousy.

What you need is a pack of happy assistants who are there to help you and be guided by what you want.  You get to be the director.

Exposing our clutter can make us feel vulnerable.  When I started working with people to help them shift their clutter this time round I realised that I had forgetten about this. I noticed that it took people a while to show me the full extent of their clutter.  Even though I’ve seen it all before and I never judge but they weren’t to  know that!

Beware …

  • The people who want you to get rid of things before you are ready
  • The people who disapprove of your clutter and the way you live your life
  • The people who don’t listen to how you want the day to go
  • The impatient and the over incredulous
Call in ….
  • Those who bring food and drinks
  • Those who are happy to take orders – yours!
  • Those you trust with your intimate feelings
  • Those who embrace all the beauty and eccentricity of you
  • The practical and the humorous
This is your wishlist.  Others may be well meaning but its important for you to feel safe and in control.  You want your helpers to be a help, not a hindrance.

If you feel overwhelmed and would like some professional support and inspiration then I am here to help.

An Easy Way to Declutter Your Desk

Your desk is one of your Magic Portals

Your desk is a magic portal that allows what you to get out into the world of business and to receive information from that world. Keeping it clutter free helps you channel the vibes in order to do that.  It helps you to manifest your business desires.

What’s your Clutter Reality Right Now?

I’m looking at my desk now and these are my thoughts right now:

Why do I put things off sometimes’ There’s a pile of unsorted papers on the right hand side. I tidied it up last night but its still clutter because I didn’t go through everything.

What about you? How does sitting at your desk make you feel? What messages about how you run your life and your business is your desk giving you?

Choosing Good Words

When you are working at your desk, what energy do you want to vibe there? How do you want to feel?

For me its ……

  • relaxed
  • inspired
  • creative
  • fun

In fact that’s how I want to feel in my office in general. Relaxed, inspired, creative, fun. That’s what I aim for and I’ve set up my space so that its easier for me to feel this way.

What about you? How do you want to feel in your workspace?

Choose your words and keep them in mind during the whole decluttering process.

Let’s Begin to Declutter Your Desk

  1. Remove everything from the desk/ Yes, that’s right – everything. Unplug all your devices. Empty your drawers. Paperwork off. Use boxes, or plastic bags or whatever is handy for you to put all your items in.
  2. Dust and clean the desk. This is a practical as well as symbolic step. You are starting afresh. Letting new energy in: fresh, new, clear energy for what you want to attract and what you want to portray in your business.
  3. Ask yourself the question …….. What things do I need on this desk that will make me more productive and give me the feelings that I really want to have in my workspace?
  4. Begin to sort through all the things that were on the desk. One by one. Ask yourself … Does this deserve a place on my desk? If it does, bless it and place it where you want it to go.
  5. Anything that is left over will either be unwanted or will need to be given a home elsewhere. This is an important step and will complete the job of clearing your desk and tidying up the loose ends.  It’s not the most fun step but worth doing.  If you like rewards think of something nice you can have or do once you’ve completed this step.
  6. Do you have everything you need on the desk. Do you need to bring in other things to set it up as you want it?
  7. Step back – look at what you have created. Take a deep breath in. Rejoice and celebrate.  It feels dam good.  Enjoy!

Magic Decluttering Portals

What are Magic Portals?

In my world Magic Portals are areas of great importance in your life. These portals are about energy flow. They represent areas in your home and business that are important for your health, wealth and happiness. And keeping your Magic Portals free of clutter is part of that.

A portal that allows what you do to get out into the world and lets the bits of the world you want, into your life. Keeping it clutter free helps you channel the vibes you need to channel. In and out.

Here are a couple of my own examples. Of course what is important to you will be different to what is important to me. But here a big one for me:

My Bedroom Portal

The bedroom fulfils three functions for me:

  • It is an area for total rest and recuperation
  • an area for love and connection
  • an area for self esteem and body connection

I have to keep remembering this otherwise I fill the bedroom up with things for work. When I clutter my bedroom with work things then I don’t get as much rest or as much love connection (I’m too busy catching up with work reading or email)

For this portal to work for me it has to be restful. I painted it blue and everything in it either says rest or love. I have a heart as a motif, for example, on the bedding and as hanging ornaments.  I love my bedroom.  When I walk into it I immediately feel welcome and that its time to relax.

What about the self-esteem and body connection?

My Wardrobe Portal

Well this is an area that I’m going to start working on. My wardrobe needs a total overhaul. I’ve outgrown so many of my clothes (literally and figuratively – but that’s a story for another day) and my wardrobe is just depressing to me. Depressing is not great energy. All the clothes have become clutter because they no longer serve my highest purpose. They make me sad in fact.

Decluttering Energy Portals

What I need to do is declutter my wardrobe. Not because its disorganised. It isn’t. Not because I have lots of clothes. I don’t. But because there items in there are a drain on me. They do not represent me or what I want or am right now.  But that’s ok because I can do something about it and I will.

Important Portals for Business Women

Your office is a biggie. It is the portal to and from your business. Is it cluttered? Is the clutter stopping you from functioning well in your business? Office clutter can be overwhelming. I understand that. I’ve just completed an overhaul of mine. I had to. The state of my office was speaking volumes about my hidden intentions and priorities. It wasn’t a picture I liked so I changed it.

Declutter your Desk

A good place to start in the office declutter is the desk and I’ve written a post about this which you can read here.

The Lounge

Lounge areas are interesting because they represent our indoor leisure time but also one of the areas where we receive friends and family. My lounge is and has probably always been my least cluttered area. I think that is because I cannot rest with clutter around me. I find it hard to switch off. It makes me feel icky. Its a sensation that is hard to describe. I can tolerate clutter in other areas and in other peoples homes very easily but in the lounge I cannot.

Other Important Portals

The Kitchen – where food is prepared and sometimes consumed. How is clutter affecting how you give yourself and your loved ones nutrition and care?
The Bedroom – what are your needs in the bedroom? Is the environment supporting your needs here?
The Office – Does this area represent what you want your business to look and feel like?
The Bathroom – an area for self care. Can you relax and regenerate in your bathroom?

How about you? What Magic Portal do you need to focus on?

Are you Ashamed of your Clutter?

Understanding Clutter Shame

I am kind and respectful when I’m working with people, helping them to declutter. I understand that it can feel exposing to put it all out there and let someone see your clutter. Sometimes people feel ashamed. That makes me sad because shame is such a horrible feeling.

Banish Shame

Shame has no place in your life. So you have clutter, so what? You want to do something about it but you haven’t yet and that is 100% fine. Shame is a horrible feeling. You don’t need it. You are good enough as you are.

Declutter Shame from the Past

Shame can come from the past. Perhaps from parents who moaned and hated the way you kept your room. They made you feel guilty about yourself and you carry this through now into your adult life.

Clutter Comparitonistis

Shame can come from comparitonitis (comparing yourself to your seemingly more organised business friends and colleagues.)

Sometimes people struggle to show me their clutter because they think I have it all sorted. Let me tell you that I get it. I was once very cluttered and its still an ongoing process. Decluttering is an ongoing thing for me and I like to share that with you in this blog.  Areas in my home and business get cluttered.  My circumstances change and what was once fine then feels cluttered again.

Observing a Perfect Clutter Free World

Things can look very shiny from the outside but we all know that isn’t always reality for everyone. Just like you, there are people who are cluttered but don’t think anyone else is. You watch your fellow entrepreneurs and they look very uncluttered. But are they? Image is important. Its very easy to set up a beautiful uncluttered back drop to record your video but what lurks off camera? They could have clutter too and hate it just as much as you.

Being a Perfectionist

The people who are most ashamed are the perfectionists. They can’t understand how they are in a cluttered state. Sometimes perfectionists procrastinate the most because they let their very high standards stop them from taking action. Understanding this can help the perfectionism release its grip on you and move you from procrastination to action. It does not have to be perfect it just has to get done. Start small and start today. Don’t let your perfectionism stand in the way.

Some People don’t Mind their Clutter

When you feel ashamed about your own clutter this will be almost impossible to understand. But its true. Some people are totally, 100% happy with their clutter. And that is fantastic. I’m not here to change people into copy cat versions of my uncluttered heaven. I’m here to support business women who find that their clutter is distressing and impeding them in some way. But believe me when I tell you that some people function perfectly with clutter and it does not bother them what others think.

Imagine that! Does that help you to reframe your own clutter? Imagine having no shame at all around this! Bliss.

Important Question Alert!

If you had no feelings of shame around your clutter would it actually bother you at all?

Would you feel the need to declutter or would you be quite fine as you are?

As I said lots of people function perfectly well with lots of things in their lives. In fact they ebrace their clutter, its part of their style and identity.  It really is true.  What’s shameful to you is perfectly fine for other women.

If the answer is no to the above question  …… then you need to work on your mindset and not your clutter. Imagine if you cleared that shame out of your system. How would you feel after?  If you want help with this contact me here and I can point you in the right direction.

If you would like some support and inspiration to start you decluttering journey then I am here to help. At the moment I am offering an amazing coaching experience to help get you kick-started. Have a look here to see how we can declutter together.

Where do you start Decluttering?

Where do you start to Declutter?

You are ready.  You have decided that you are going to do it.  But there is so much.  You don’t know where to start.
At this moment clutter overwhelm can put you off.  Don’t let it.
Here are a few simple  tips on choosing where to start your decluttering.

 Declutter a tiny area

Starting small takes away all pressure. Choose something very small: a table, a book shelf, a pen pot and start there.  It can be a quick win which gives you confidence and allows that energy to start flowing.

Declutter in 10 minute stints

Timing yourself works in a similar way.  It gives you control.  However overwhelmed you feel, you will be able to do ten minutes.  When you work like this start on the area you feel most drawn to.  Tackle that first in ten minute stints.

Declutter the area which will have the most impact on your life

When you are ready, this is the most impactful way to work on decluttering.  Ask your self the following questions to find your target area:
  • Which area causes me the most hassle in my work and life at the moment?
  • What do I really want in my business that my clutter is stopping me from achieving?
  • What area of clutter most stops me living my life freely and without hassle?

Often its the area that you have most been procrastinating about.  For me, for a long time it was my office.  Then I realised that it was just the room I needed to declutter to get the juices flowing in my business again.

When you have identified which area is causing you the most difficulty then its time to begin. Working in this area can release enormous amounts of magical  energy and will be of great benefit to you.

You will be in the zone of life where you most need to make changes.  This work can be exhilarating.  Lots of thoughts and feelings will be flying about when you tackle this type of clutter.  But its worth it.

Just a last little tip …. keep a notebook with you to write down any ideas that occur to you.

If you would like some support and inspiration to start you decluttering journey then I am here to help.  At the moment I am offering an amazing coaching experience to help get you kick-started.  Have a look here to see how we can declutter together.

How to Tackle Your Clutter Overwhelm

There is nothing wrong with things. Some are essential, some are useful, some are enriching. But when we have too many things and they start to create stagnant energy in our lives, then its time to declutter. But knowing exactly what clutter is, what to let go of and what to hang on to, can be challenging. It can even be overwhelming. Here are a few tips to help you get unstuck.

Don’t Look at the Bigger Picture

This is unusual advice but not in this case. Sometimes looking at the clutter as a whole is overwhelming. Yuck! Who wants to feel like that?

Take a Step Back from your Clutter

Choose one small area
Get close in
Take a deep breath
Its just one thing at a time

Setting the Timer can Help

Setting short time limits on your decluttering can help combat overwhelm. Just ten minutes. You can do that. Tiny steps. And that is all you need. I’m a great procrastinator and that has helped me no end over the years.

So …………. just one small area for just ten minutes.

Following your instincts

If you can relax enough you may find that that is enough. You are asking yourself for only ten minutes of decluttering and you just going to look at a really small area. There is no pressure. Just this can get your juices flowing where perhaps previously you were stuck.

Useful Decluttering Questions

So here you are. Perhaps still in overwhelm. You pick up your first item and you still have no idea if you should let it go or keep it. If you are still stuck then questions can help to dislodge your energy around the things you are trying to declutter.

My standard decluttering questions are:

Do you love it?
Do you need to keep it for practical or legal purposes?

If the answer to either of these questions is no then what you have in front of you is most likely to be clutter.

It could be that even thou you have answered no to these questions that the monkey brain is still chattering away to you. I call this the Clutter Buts.  Let’s talk about the Clutter Buts

The Clutter Buts

The Clutter Buts are all your clutter objections coming to the surface. They represent what is holding you back from letting go of your unwanted and uneeded posession.  Here are some examples of Clutter Buts:

But my daughter gave me this
But this was expensive
But what if I need it later on
But I could do with a spare one anyway
But I’ve had it for years

Don’t Declutter Everything Straight Away

If you have been in serious clutter overwhelm and you have a case of the Clutter Buts that’s ok. Release the clutter that you are ready to release. And no more. That is fine.

If you suffer from overwhelm the aim is to just get the ball rolling. To start to move some of your clutter, not to tackle everything and move yourself into more overwhelm. Easy, That’s the name of the game. Be very kind and gentle on yourself. It will come.

Keep Setting the Timer

Keep on at it gently. You will declutter things and over time it all gets much easier.  I promise.

If you would like decluttering support.  I’ve got a great offer on at the moment if you want to take a look over here. My aim is to help you through the process of change and make it fun, invigorating and easy, with a good few surprises along the way.
